Sacred Heart College was filled with excited year 7 and 8 students from all over Hawke’s Bay at its Touch of Class open day last week.
Principal Maria Neville-Foster said it was fantastic to see the future generation of Sacred Heart experiencing what the school could offer them.
Year 10 students from Sacred Heart College hosted the event last Wednesday and acted as guides for the young visitors.
Rikki Lee Te Kira, who originally came to Sacred Heart from Flaxmere Primary, said she had enjoyed stepping up to be a leader for the younger students.
Fellow year 10 Charlotte Kingi, who spent her primary school years at St Patrick’s School, said she was pleased to be able to share the experience with the year 7 and 8 students.
“It’s been great. It was cool to see everyone get together and to teach them something new that they didn’t know before.”
Emma Rich from Taradale Primary said she had enjoyed the experience. She hopes to join her sister Hannah, who is in year 10, at Sacred Heart next year.
“I’ve found it quite fun. All the teachers here are really nice, all the students here are really nice and surprising my sister was nice to me. I enjoyed it.
I really enjoyed learning about the Maori culture and I’ve enjoyed learning more about Jesus,” says Emma.
Sacred Heart College is happy to organise a private tour of the school for parents who want to send their daughters to the school.
“Our vision for the school is that we are the school of choice for a quality catholic education for girls of Hawke’s Bay,” says Mrs Neville- Foster.
“Research shows that students in smaller high schools with smaller classes are more likely to succeed at school. Because of our small classes, our teachers give greater attention to our girls’ needs.”
She says the school prides itself on its academic achievements.
“Our NCEA results from last year are to be celebrated, with history being made by our Year 11 and 12 groups. NCEA statistics across all three levels continue to be above both National Girls’ Achievement and schools similar to ours."
